89 Class Artificers and the ‘Get-Together Saga’ I belong to this wonderful group of people from pan India; Simply we are known as 89- That’s it! We are the 89 th class of Artificers who joined the Indian Navy as Apprentices in Jan 1987. Since then, we together have completed training, active service and eventually retired after completing the contracted defense service period.   Originally, we were 225- but now reduced to 214; missing 11 have left for heavenly abode earlier than expected. Out of the 214, few are non-reachable as they have ‘deserted’ from Navy long back, and lost their whereabouts, sadly! Much later to our retirement and thanks to the social media revolution, we started communicating with each other, again through various platforms. We have rebuilt our connections on the strong foundation of our once existed emotionally bonded relations. Many of our friends resurfaced from their seclusion and stopped being ‘incommunicado’!   In T ribute to Kargil Vijay Diwas! On this Vijay Diwas, the 25th Anniversary of the Kargil victory, the Nation pays tribute to the brave soldiers who exhibited extraordinary courage and resilience in extremely challenging conditions on the Kargil Sector.  527 brave sons of Mother India made their supreme sacrifice for Her honor!   Hundreds were injured, many with permanently disabling injuries. I take this opportunity to pray for them, thank them for what they did for the Country and future generations, and salute them from the bottom of my heart.   The Kargil War Memorial, also known as Dras War Memorial, is a war memorial built by the Indian Army in the town of Dras, near Kargil city in Kargil district of Ladakh, India, commemorating the 1999 Kargil War between India and Pakistan. 89 Class Artificers and the ‘Get-Together Saga’ - Part 2 (2024 - Organising and Arrival Funs)

  89 Class Artificers and the ‘Get-Together Saga’ 2024 -Araku Get-Together  Araku Valley, around 100 km away from Visakhapatnam was identified as the unanimous choice for the get-together location. Most 89er has personal connections with this port city of Vizag, which is also the Head Quarters of the Eastern Naval Command, Indian Navy. The city also hosts the Indian Navy’s Shipwright School through which the 89 SWAs have completed their ‘rigorous’ Apprenticeship training.  Everyone will initially check in at Vizag by the Aug 30th morning, and then travel to Araku, together on a bus! As the get-together week approaches, more updates start pouring in from all over. Programme itineraries are chalked out; Dates and times are fixed after consulting with everyone; if there are differences of opinions, majority decision is democratically chosen through polling.
